March 9: Around BC Celebrates Entrepreneurial Success
Vancouver, BC, March 9, 2011 — Small Business BC unveils Around BC: Entrepreneurial Success Stories, a book filled with advice, information and resources from more than 70 BC business owners to celebrate, promote and support BC’s thriving spirit of entrepreneurship.
“Small business is big business for the economic vitality of the BC economy, especially in these economic down times,” said George Hunter, CEO of Small Business BC. “We thank these BC business owners for sharing their entrepreneurial stories, insight and practical tips as a means to educate, inspire and encourage the approximately 400,000 small business owners and entrepreneurs across BC.”
Around BC features inspirational stories and insight from entrepreneurs in diverse range of businesses: from landscaping, graphic arts and wineries to IT firms, first aid trainers and soap manufacturers. Some of these BC businesses are newly started, and some are growing rapidly, including FROGBOX, an eco-friendly moving container rental company that recently secured investment finance and gained national exposure on the popular entrepreneurial TV show, Dragons’ Den.
The book is being distributed to small business owners and service providers throughout BC to provide tips, ideas and resources, and to gain the featured businesses valuable exposure. In fact, more than 20 of the Around BC stories have already been republished in local newspapers and online news sources.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper declared 2011 as the Year of the Entrepreneur as part of the Government of Canada’s efforts to raise public awareness of the importance of entrepreneurs to Canada’s economy, and to pay tribute to their drive and dedication.
“Canada’s entrepreneurs are the backbone of our economy, creating jobs and driving economic growth in communities large and small across our country,” Prime Minister Harper stated in January. “They invest themselves completely in their businesses working countless hours on every aspect of their enterprise – from research and development to manufacturing, marketing and delivery.”
“Small Business BC will continue to provide relevant, timely and accessible information and tools to entrepreneurs to help them continue to build strong small business communities throughout BC,” said Hunter.
Small Business BC and its regional partners gratefully acknowledge the financial support of Western Economic Diversification Canada, the BC Ministry of Finance, the Ministry Responsible for Small Business.
